How to brush a young child’s teeth, or those with special needs

As a mother of three children I know how hard it can be to brush young children’s teeth, but not brushing their teeth, especially at night time can lead to tooth decay, pain, infection and your child might even need an operation to remove infected teeth.

It can be hard ‘but keep trying and it does become easier’

If your child is autistic or has special needs and you want some further advice please don’t hesitate to contact Dr Armaana Ahmad for some informal dental advice and tips.

Miswak or Toothbrush, is there a difference?

miswak

‘Miswak’ is a natural toothbrush commonly used by Arabs  and Muslims from all around the world, formed from the chewed end of a stick (Salvadora persica).  It has been scientifically found to be effective at improving oral health and the miswak itself has many additional chemical qualities (Almas  1999).  The use of Miswak in western countries is increasing among people wanting to use a ‘natural’ product and among Muslim communities who seek the religious virtues of using a ‘miswak’.

If you compare a ‘toothbrush’ side by side with a ‘miswak’ they have many similarities.  Both can be used to effectively remove plaque but both need to be used in the correct way with good instruction and good technique.  But that’s not where the similarities end… did you know that most islamic scholars say the same virtues are applicable to a traditional toothbrush?

I wrote an article for a website promoting health among muslim communities that discusses the religious virtues of the miswak in comparison to a toothbrush and finds that the religious virtues of using a miswak are also attributed to using a toothbrush, so not so much of a difference after all!

Inhalation Sedation

WHAT IS IT?

Inhalation sedation, is when Nitrous oxide gas, more commonly known as “laughing gas”  is breathed along with oxygen through a flexible and comfortable “nasal hood” fitted over the nose. It can be used in children over the age of 5.

It is very safe and there are very few contra-indications to carrying out the sedation, meaning its suitable for most patients.

Many children are too anxious to have dental treatment whilst fully awake, having treatment under inhalation sedation can make routine treatment more comfortable and for anxious children may avoid the need for a GA.

The level of sedation can be easily adjusted since the amount of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen are altered individually for each patient.  It is a very safe gas, and is always delivered with at least 30% oxygen so there is no risk of hypoxia or low oxygen to the brain.

The calming effect begins within minutes and quickly wears off once it has stopped being given to the patient. This enables patients to receive dental care in a very relaxed state and will still be able to go back to school or continue the rest of their day as normal.

All dental treatments can be carried out under inhalation sedation and it is especially suited to children needing orthodontic extractions.

Paediatric Dental Services

Our most ‘precious pearls’ are our children, and we pull out all the stops to make sure your children grow to love coming to the dentist!

Dr Armaana Ahmad completed a Masters in Paediatric Dentistry from the Eastman Dental Institute and works in the Eastman Dental Hospital Paediatric Dentistry Department as a Speciality Doctor four days a week.  On Wednesdays she offers her services on a private basis in Morden.

Most of our patients are eligible for NHS treatment but choose to have advanced dental services,  for example inhalation sedation, privately for their children to avoid waiting times, or simply to make routine dental treatment more comfortable for them.

Parents often also attend requesting pulpectomies for their children to avoid extractions.  Patients are accepted for individual items of treatment on referral from their own dentist or for ongoing care and routine treatment.

Whether you’re child is being referred by their own dentist or you want to bring them yourselves, you simply need to book an appointment to be seen.

It is helpful for us to know a little bit more about your child to make their first visit a friendly visit.

Please download and fill out our New Child Patient Questionnaire before they arrive, so we can welcome your child in the way that suits them best.

Adult Dental Services

Dr Armaana Ahmad also offers Adult general dentistry services.  She has worked in general practice for over 10 years and is skilled in all the major disciplines of adult dentistry from treatment of periodontal disease to restorative crown and bridge treatments and cosmetic dentistry.

What you can expect when you visit us.

On your first visit you can expect time to talk about your dental needs and expectations, a thorough oral examination and most likely some further special tests like radiographs, images or impressions.

By the end of your first appointment you will have had a detailed discussion about your oral health assessment and receive a written report to take away with you.  Any treatment required or proposed will be discussed and detailed in a letter which you should receive within 7 – 14 days of your appointment.

If you are in pain or have issues that need to be addressed more urgently Dr Armaana Ahmad may  delay the full oral health assessment and focus on your urgent care requirement instead.

We want everyone to be able to access high quality dental care at an affordable price, please see our dental care plans for details of our basic dental health plan and advanced care plan.

We also offer inhalation sedation for adults, please see the inhalation sedation section for more information.

To save time before your first visit you can download and fill out our Medical History and Registration Form before you arrive at the practice.

Dr Armaana Ahmad, is unable to accept any new adult patients to her NHS treatment lists, all Adults patients choosing to see Dr Ahmad are seen as private patients.

Registration is still open for NHS adult patients at the For One Dental Surgery and you may choose to be seen by Dr  Muneer or Dr Sheikh

Dental Care Plans

Dental treatments and materials vary greatly depending on the level of aesthetic precision or strength required.  We aim to make quality dentistry affordable to everyone, whilst maintaining choice , so have separated our dental care into two different plans.

Basic Dental Health Plan.

This plan will cover your oral health needs to treat dental disease, secure oral health and routine maintenance.  it has been designed to be similar (but not identical) to the NHS treatment bands for dental treatment.  The aim is to secure oral health with  sound evidence based treatment and preventive care.  For more details please contact us.  Urgent Dental Care is not covered under the Basic Dental Health Plan, and carries a separate fees.

Advanced Care Plan

Most of our patients will be able to receive all their oral health requirements under our Basic Dental Health Plan.  However for our more discerning patient, looking for the more aesthetic treatment options, cosmetic dentistry or with advanced dental health needs, we offer an itemised treatment list, with different treatment options and prices clearly indicated.  When you attend for your initial examination the relevant treatment choices and prices can be discussed and the differences between different options can be highlighted to you to help you make an informed decision about your care.
